The presentation
contains four components: a written summary of the
paper, an opinion of the paper, the in-class presentation,
and a description of your approach to the assignment.
Written
Summary
Group assignments
are given below. Write a well-written, easy to read summary of your
paper. Translate all the "it can clearly be seen" and
"it is obvious" into clear descriptions. Make up your
own examples to describe the algorithms in the paper. Make sure
you describe at least one detailed algorithm. Your summary should
be of sufficient length to clearly describe the paper. A one page
summary is probably too short and a 500 page summary is too long.
Any other length is up to you. Typically, summaries range from 5-20
pages -- but that is in no way a requirement.
Opinion
At the end
of your summary, write a one-page review that describes your opinion
of the paper. Did the authors clearly state their contribution?
Were you convinced it was a contribution? If you were asked to rate
the paper on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being "Strong Reject"
and 10 being "Strong Accept" what score would you give
it?
Description
of Approach
Describe in
one to three pages how your group approached the assignment, problems
you encountered, things you wish you had been told prior to the
assignment, and any additional comments you would like to make on
the assignment. Each member of the group should write their own
"description of approach" document.
Presentation
Plan on a 30-45
minute presentation. If at all possible, clearly state a key algorithm
from your paper and develop it with clear examples. Make sure the
audience understands the paper itself and the contribution made,
and is very clear on how this paper is different from others in
the field. Develop your own examples to describe what is in the
paper -- do not just use the ones presented in the paper. Powerpoint
is strongly suggested for your presentation, but is not required.
If you do make a powerpoint presentation, send it to the TA and
it will be posted on the website.
What to
Turn In
One week before
your presentation, e-mail the TA a PDF file of your presentation
handouts called HANDOUTS-nn.PDF (where nn is the number
of your group). This will contain the materials you will use during
your presentation (similar to those used in class). E-mail your
written summary in a file called SUMMARY-nn.PDF.
On the day
of your presentation, bring an envelope with a printed copy of your
summary, opinion, presentation materials, and description of your
approach.
