Detailed Information on MWDBRS at IIT

Info about Daily Events

WiFi access

Three wireless access points will be available to the general public on Saturday. Their SSIDs are "dbwireless," "MattoxNet," and "SCS2WL." They're clustered around the north side of the building, so reception should be better there.

AV equipment for talks

The auditorium is equipped with an ELMO device. Presenters will be able to upload their work onto a Windows laptop. For the sake of time, we encourage people to use the provided laptop and upload their presentations before the start of the gong show. An overhead is also available if people have transparencies.

Posters and demos

The poster session will be held outside of the auditorium. The demos will be held inside and outside the auditorium, depending on the necessary space. The posters and demos for the first session may be set up on arrival. The posters and demos for the second session may be set up after the first session is over. Storage is available if necessary.

Lounge area

On the east side of the building, there is an open lounge area. You may rest here, interact with students, etc.

Storage

Some guests may require storage of equipment for the day. Please see me (Wai Gen Yee) or one of the volunteers to access the day's storage room (SB233).

Recommended Food

If you want dim sum and you don't want to drive, we recommend Furama Restaurant, a 10 minute walk from the Stuart Building. Just exit the building and walk west. Once you've passed I90/94, turn right, and Furama is two blocks north.

A good Mexican place in Bridgeport that is a 5 minute drive west is Pancho Pistola's.

Getting Around

If you want to go to the main area of Chinatown, you should probably leave your car on campus and call a cab. (The center of Chinatown is about 1 mile away.) One cab company is Yellow Cab (312-829-4222). Tell them to go to 10 West 31st Street, the Stuart Building of IIT and give them 30 minutes to show up.

Bridgeport is generally not so crowded, except there's a White Sox game on April 16.

The Student Center is just a 5 minute walk away.

Note that Chicago is basically organized like a grid. The building numbers correspond to how far away a building is from a point in downtown Chicago. Generally, every block away from the city center increases the building numbers by 100. Since the Stuart building is on 31st Street on the south side of Chicago, intersecting State Street, we can say it's located on the "3100 South block of State." Equivalently, we can say that the Stuart Building is "located on the 0 block of 31st Street," since it's on a corner. Also, every 8 blocks is a mile. Since the Stuart building is at 10 West 31st Street, and address of 800 West 31st Street is approximately a mile west.
